What is membrane switch?

A membrane switch is a momentary electrical on/off switch for activating and de-activating a

circuit. Whereas a mechanical switch is usually made of copper and plastic parts, a

membrane switch circuit is printed on a heat-stabilized polyester or Indium tin oxide (ITO)using

a  copper-silver- or graphite/silver ink to lend conductivity.

Flat type membrane switch:

The graphic overlay part of this type of membrane switch is non-tactile. There is no embossing effect on it.

The option is using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to back light. However, LEDs create bright spots and are

not suitable for overall back lighting of a panel, but rather as indicator lights. LEDs can either be surface-

mounted to the circuit layer or be placed on a separate LED layer
